Samantha Ternelus, Barry University

Samantha Ternelus Student Ambassador

ESC Heidelberg Ambassador

What is your year and academic concentration?
I am a junior (third year), and I am majoring in International Studies.

Why did you choose the ESC Heidelberg program?
I chose ESC because of my own personal interests with the Holocaust and wanting to be a part of the country that instigated it. Going to the museums, concentration camps, possibly meeting more survivors… I look forward to it. Also, it was affordable, tuition and pocket wise. My school was able to cover room and board as well which was great. I budget something as simple as groceries and it works out nearly exact every week.

What are you most looking forward to during your semester abroad program?
Finding out what makes me passionate. When I went to Haiti, I loved it. Meeting new people, immersing myself in the culture—I can see myself doing that over a period of time. Since I was in a place that was familiar, I decided to branch out and go to Europe to see what the other half of the world can spike in me.

What are your interests and hobbies?
I love to dance/work out, read, and eat. Being able to do all in one day equals a happy Samantha.

Do you speak any foreign languages?
I speak Haitian Creole.

What do you expect to gain from your semester in Heidelberg?
Experiences that will help me grow as a person and learning to embrace non-tangible things, such as living in the moment. I am all about the future and what I have planned but a sort of peace settles over me when we go on excursions and I realize that I am in Germany. This is a place that seemed far away a few months ago. I want to soak it all in and take it for what it is – a journey without an agenda.
